About Mr Pai

Vishal is a Melbourne-trained knee surgeon

Consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Vishal Pai, is a man on a mission – a mission to provide expert services in knee surgery to help you and others who suffer from knee injuries or live in pain because of their knees. He’s undertaken specialist training in the United Kingdom and the United States to expand his levels of expertise. Vishal is also skilled at communicating with you. His calm, friendly and competent manner puts you instantly at ease, despite your pain and the trauma of severe and worrying knee injuries. Vishal brings his wealth of specialist training, and his constantly updated evidence-based knowledge, to improve the function of your knee.

Common knee surgeries performed

International sub-specialist training

His passion for sports knee injuries, including complex ligament reconstruction, saw Vishal move to the United Kingdom to complete his sub-specialist training, and he completed two knee fellowships. The first was at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, specialising in patellofemoral stabilisation, revision knee replacement and partial knee replacement surgery. The second was in sports knee surgery at the Fortius Clinic in London, working with Mr Andrew Williams, an international expert in the field. It was here that he furthered his expertise in primary and revision ACL reconstruction, multi-ligament knee reconstruction and complex meniscal repair. Vishal worked with many elite athletes at the Fortius Clinic and knows what’s involved in getting an athlete safely back into competition. It’s not just the operative techniques and rehabilitation, but also includes psychology and decision-making.

Managing children’s knee injuries

Vishal was awarded six months of training in paediatric orthopaedics at Shriners Hospital for Children, in Portland, in the United States. He found it very rewarding looking after children with knee injuries so they could get back to the sports they love. Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction in a growing child is very different from in an adult, and Vishal has the expertise required to perform this surgery on children.

Research and teaching

Vishal believes in supporting the next generation of doctors. His work at Eastern Health and Alfred Health gives him that opportunity. He’s also a senior lecturer for medical students at Monash University and supervises trainee orthopaedic surgeons. With his inquiring mind, Vishal is involved in clinical research. He’s also published in several international journals and has presented his research nationally and internationally. He knows how important it is to keep up to date with the latest evidence-based orthopaedic information.
