Meniscal Conditions

Meniscus injuries — especially meniscus tears — are one of the more common types of knee injuries. Although they don’t always require surgery, a consultation with a knee specialist can ensure you of the most appropriate treatment pathway that leads to a fast recovery.

Meniscus Tear

The meniscus acts like a shock absorber in the knee joint. It is a C-shaped structure that lies between the femur and tibia. Each knee has 2 menisci, one on the inside (medial) and one on the outside (lateral). A meniscus tear can occur with a traumatic knee injury and can cause pain and swelling within the knee.

Discoid Meniscus

A discoid meniscus is thicker than normal and oval-shaped (rather than C-shaped). It may lack the normal peripheral attachments that give the meniscus stability.
